on the resort shows: an unlikely bit of styling, borrowed from old ladies on spring break—sunglasses dangling from chains. At Balenciaga (left) and Louis Vuitton (right), shades hung on cords the likes of which our great aunt used to favor. Will it work on the street? That’s debatable, though you’ve got to hand it to the able stylists at the two houses, they made it look fresh and chic. Still, it does remind one a little of Michael Kors’ quip about one of the resort season’s aliases, cruise: it’s “some woman in a warm-up suit at a buffet table.”

A-list celebrities and legions of QVC shoppers aren’t the only people who have been influenced by Rachel Zoe’s trademark style. At yesterday’s preview party for Zoe’s new QVC collection at the Gramercy Park Hotel, attendees included not only Zoe faves Prabal Gurung, Brian Atwood, and Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig but Zoe’s mom, too. And as the stylist-to-the-stars gave a tour of her new duds, the materfamilias couldn’t help but chime in now and then. “I’m designing for everyone,” Zoe (left, with designer Mandy Coon) said, citing a shaggy faux-fur jacket and an oversize pashmina-style wrap. “That jacket’s for one girl—like, a Kate Hudson girl, fun, funky, easy. The wrap is more like for a classy Jennifer Garner girl. And then,” she added, “there’s me, and I just wear all of it. Throw it all on!” Mom, standing in the background, took the opportunity to jangle her Rachel Zoe for QVC jewelry. “Look!” she said. “I’m wearing a lot, too!” Apparently, maximalism runs in the family.

Oscar de la Renta—old guard though he may be—isn’t resisting the tides of change. Don Oscar may not tweet himself (he leaves that to @OscarPRGirl), but he embraced the future with a live-stream of his Resort ‘11 show on Monday. And on that runway, another harbinger of the digital age: ODLR iPad-case clutches storming down the catwalk. (De la Renta admitted to WWD that he’s just ordered one of the tablets himself.) The embroidered Mosaico leather pouches ($290) will arrive even before the Resort collection—versions in carnation, espresso, marigold, and stone go on sale June 30. Where? Exclusively on www.oscardelarenta.com, of course.
