Fashionising 101: Must-have lingo for style mavens!

*Sourced and edited by Dayana Sobri

Every industry has a lexicon: some of it puzzling like Internet lingo viral and sticky and some of it overexposed like business' thinking out of the box.

The fashion industry, however, is particularly fond of relying on a standard set of words and phrases.

Here, the most annoying, overused and pretentious words in fashion:

Hall of Fame

  • Must have (Example: Leather is a must have this fall.)
  • It's all about (Example: This season, it's all about embellishment.)
  • I'm loving (Example: I'm loving ice blue.)
  • Of the moment (Example: Embellishment is so of the moment.)
  • It screams (Example: Pink just screams 1999.)
  • Beyond fashion (Example: Jackie O's style was just beyond fashion.)
  • ________ is the new black. (Example: White is the new black).
  • ________ is important this season. (Example: Cashmere is important this season.)

Excessive use of foreign-sounding terms

The ultimate slams

  • Done
  • Over
  • Bourgeois
  • Tired
  • If you have to ask, you don't get it.
  • Common
  • So last year
  • Very yesterday/last week/last century
  • Too matchy-matchy

  • New
  • Now
  • Fresh
  • Brave
  • Chic (chicer, chicest)
  • Divine
  • Girly
  • Love
  • Important
  • To die for
